In July 2018, torrential rains in western Japan devastated decades-old mikan groves. Particularly hard hit was a remote hamlet. No one died, but half of the homes were damaged or destroyed. The only road in was torn apart and assistance was delayed. 78-year-old widow Yoshi contemplated leaving to move in with her son. Having lost nearly everything, Shuhei, decided to cut his losses and quit mikan farming.
