Billed as "The siren of the Fjords," she starred opposite Gary Cooper in "The Adventures of Marco Polo" and opposite John Wayne in "Three Faces West," and was a leading player in "Algiers." She ended her career prematurely and in 1948 attended the Kann Institute of Art in West Hollywood, studying oils and portraiture. From 1961 to 1969 she lived in Mexico, where she continued painting, and also designing jewelry for 'Royal Copenhagen' in Denmark. In 1961 she entered the hospital in Mexico City on an emergency basis for a recurring kidney problem, there reportedly she died after developing pulmonary embolism linked to a massive blood clot. In a strange twist of fate, her twin brother Knut Haukelid, a Norwegian freedom fighter in World War II, also suffered an embolism in Oslo, just a few hours after learning of his sister's death. He recovered.
